Antibes
The Vieille Ville, Antibes old town, is by far the best part of this town with the old winding streets. The long, arched protective wall along the port makes a nice walk along the sea. There are plenty of little streets for exploring, restaurants of all types and prices. There are lots of shops in this area of the town, from authentic provencal shops to tourist gift shops. The famous book - Zorba, the Greek - was written in Antibes old town at number 8, Rue de Bas-Castellet, by the Greek writer Nikos Kazantzaki.
For a long time Antibes was the only large town between Marseille and Italy. Protected by ramparts from an early time, it has managed to conserve historic monuments from each period in its heritage. The Chateau, bastion and towers have today been transformed into a magnificent Modern Art Museum, History and Archeology Museum and museum of traditional crafts and local culture.
Antibes has both fine sand and pebble beaches. There are many water sports available such as, water skiing, parascending, diving and fishing. The Picasso Museum can be found within the Chateau Grimaldi, near the sea and ramparts, built by the medieval architect Vauban. One of his first fortresses, Fort Carré in Antibes, was formed in a star shape, enabling the cannons to be able to fire in all directions. Napoleon was once held prisoner there.
