Cannes 2008 Film Festival

Ever since the 50's when Bridget Bardot appeared scantly clad, frolicking on the beach for the cameras during the Cannes Film festival, Cannes has grown to embody sex and cinema, two of the world's favourite pastimes.

The most important film festival in the world, it is famous for red carpets and celebrity parties. The Cannes Film Festival, or Festival de Cannes, takes place over 12 days each May. During this time the entire focus of the international film industry descends on the Cannes shore front, known as the Croisette, to take part in the Cannes Film Festival. Thousands of films are screened, careers are made, ruined, and celebrities from all over the world gather to bask in the limelight.

The 61st Cannes Film Festival
will take place on 14th - 25th May 2008

Celebrity spotting during the festival is about being in the right place at the right time. The the large number of celebrities in town during the event is very high because they are either promoting a film, in a movie which is screening in the official program, on one of the festival juries, doing business with other film people, or just to grab a piece of the limelight. The first weekend is the busiest period of the festival. This is where you'll encounter the biggest crowds and the most stars. It's the best time to be at the festival if you want to get the best atmosphere. The red carpet is the place to spot celebrities, but you need to get there early. The crowds start to arrive soon after lunch. The best location is on the road just behind the crowd barriers, looking straight towards the Palais steps. Other locations like the sides tend to be blocked by the photographers and cameramen. Away from the red carpet it is a good idea to check out cafes and restaurants around the town centre, or the lobbies of large hotels. Waiting along the shore front road, the Croisette can also result in a few sightings if you wait long enough.

The Festival's main event is the Official Selection, and is where all the glamour is to be found. Films in this section are referred to as being 'in competition' and compete for a variety of awards. The biggest of which is the Palme d'Or, the Golden Palm, for best picture. The official selection for of films screening in the festival are announced in the middle of April each year. Screening schedules and venues are released a week or two before the festival starts.
